Mobile Monday in Frankfurt - Mobile Travel Solutions

Axel and me were attending the MobileMonday session in Frankfurt yesterday evening
and as usual I would like to sum up the speeches for your information:

Deutsche Bahn AG:
Internal Mobile Communication for travellers information
Heiko Sasse, Deutsche Bahn AG
Mr. Sasse explained in detail how "Zugbegleiter", "Zugführer" and all related internal parties within the DB are communicating and how the data flow looks like
He agrees that the main reason why customer of DB are not satisfied is the lack of information. Their challenge is to handle the high complexity of information
and lacking information of "Nebenstrecken". They are using since 1999 the RIS (ReiseInformationssystem) with the Nokia Communicator as front end device
for alle service employees. These handsets are using a special software designed for en- and decrypt of information. The information is still only sent via SMS
and the encryption takes place due to the high costs of SMS (1-2 mio SMS per month). With the last migration to the recent Nokia communicator also SMS via GPRS are used.

Big Red Zebra
Big Red Zebra-your Frankfurt mobile offline Client
David Wasser Founder and CEO Sharp Mind
SharpMind developed a Java application that enhales offline LocationBasedServices (like time table of underground etc.) which gets the location only via cell ID, no online connection or GPS is needed.
The target market areyoung people with no smart phone … the concept is based on Forrester Research that stated that only 30% of the handset market will be rich smart phones in 2013 and that mobile data is too expensive especially for pre-paid customer. All theses assumptions can be doubted ;-) ...

Lufthansa- Mobile Services
Mobile Portal, SMS-Services and mobile Boardingpass
Fr. Stefanie Heucke, Mobile Services Deutsche Lufthansa AG
Mrs. Hecke introduced all three mobile offerings of the Lufthansa
- SMS check in is only available for prime customer like "Senators" etc.
- The new developed mobile portal (MindMetrics is the vendor) offers all available information and entertainment a "mobile" LH customer is requesting (even handy games and screensaver)
- The Mobile Picture Boarding Pass is now available for all European travel since yesterday (incl. choice of seed), which means that LH are offering a complete paperless boarding into their planes within Europe.

Mobile TV - How to ...

Within the blog of the the german online marketing fair OMD (Online Marketing Düsseldorf) Stefan Bielau is discussing the service "Mobile TV" and trying to clarify the issues and "how to's" for service provider. It is interesting to see that the former information and discussion about "Mobile TV" was always about technology, standards and market share, but not about the desire of the customer. I totally agree with Stefan, that the customer need should be the absolut focus, but to identify this need, providers have to change their mind and test in "trial & error" mode various service options to target their customer. It is easy to question investments if one tries to quantify ROIs for Mobile TV, because there is no actual Mobile TV service in the market that reaches a critical mass. If there would be a service with a high quality, high availability and interesting content - Mobile TV would rock the mobile market ... let's see if somebody is listening!

Why DVB-T is not DVB-H/Mobile TV

Finally there is on real life test (in german) which indicates why it does not make sense to provide and sell DVB-T cell phones as Mobile TV -> Link
Hopefully people like Vodafone Germany Boss Joussen et. al are reading this user experience carefully before judging and forecasting mobile services the next time.

Nike PhotoID - Mobile Marketing von Nike

Mobile Zeitgeist just promoted an interesting new mobile marketing concept (not totally new - but nice idea) from nike, called Nike PhotoID. This concept includes the idea to send per mobile any colored picture to the NikeID platform to create your own shoe. How does this work? - the color scheme of the photo is the base for the coloring of the shoe. Link

WDR Mediathek regional - Grimme award

Really good approach, concept and execution: The WDR (public german broadcaster) received the "Grimme Online Award 2008" for the online video and audio portal "WDR Mediathek regional". The portal desires via their local media search whereby relevant video and audio gets tagged and sorted for specific cities or areas.

New York Times planning API

Just read via ReadWriteWeb that the big newspaper New York Times is planning to launch an API where from selected content could be grabbed and used for own mash-ups. I remember that some month ago the NYT re-thinked their business model and terminated the pay-per-click model for their articles. Interesting move! Curious to see where that leads to ...

Public Mobile TV Viewing in Germany

ARD and ZDF (the public broadcaster in Germany) announced yesterday that they are going to show all European Championship Soccer matches via their mobile service offerings. This means, verybody with an appropriate mobile data contract is able to stream the popular games to their mobiles in June.

But the limited network, small batteries and bad transcoding of most of the mobile handsets will only last for some minutes of nice Mobile TV experience, nor more. Unfortunately the consortium Mobile 3.0 was not able to manage to launch their DVB-H product this summer.

Anyhow: cross fingers for the german team ;-)

Mobile Monday in Düsseldorf, Mobile Messaging, Mobile Applications

This Monday another MobileMonday had happened, this time in Düsseldorf, the first time at "Spoerl Am Ey/Stadtmuseum", close to Vodafone and Düsseldorfer Altstadt. The topic was Mobile Messaging and Mobile Applications which lead to a packed room with approx. 100 people.

Speeches:
Jens Leister (Product Manager of Otello - a Vodafone company) presented the concept of imaginary search whereby pictures in newspaper like BILD got captured via a cellphone camera and send via MMS to 4242 to get more digital information and data about the photo.

Honour Pearson of MoMail in Sweden showed and explained their mobile email-push service offering that is set up as direct competition to the black berry service but for free and customizable via web. They have plans for business cases which include mobile advertising.

Frog2Frog's Hugh Sheehy brought a java client for mobile sms advertising. The concept includes that the end customer receives commercials while writing and sending a sms through the java client and gets rewarded. Vodafone CZ went life with this services some weeks ago.

BlackBerry's RIM got represented from Martin Thyssen who showed off the opportunities of mobile applications via the RIM platform, mostly in a B2B environment.

The last presenter was Michael Stenberg of Yahoo who described the mobile solutions Yahoo Go! 3.0 and oneconnect. Their goal is to reduce complexity of mobile applications via mobile widgets.

Mobil Monday Düsseldorf has a new home which really suits the event. Good speeches paired with interesting people, free drinks and foot is worth to spend some Mondays a year there.
